Vow Writing Tips
In today’s post we will talk about some wedding vow writing tips! Writing your own vows is one of the most beautiful and emotional components to your wedding. Writing them is a powerful emotional moment. The day your wedding arrives, you will be caught in all the beautiful romance and the emotion will be heightened. A wedding day comes and goes, but your vows are lifelong commitments and we encourage you to take the time to write your own! As Calgary wedding photographers, we have seen some beautiful vows and we hope this post inspires you.
Why writing your own wedding vows is so special
Your vows are the most important words you will speak to your partner on your wedding day. Though it can be a bit daunting, it can also be so wonderful. Remember, this is about you and your partner. The wedding vows you write will be what you remember in the hardest times and the most wonderful times together. They are so important and worth spending time on.
Use beautiful heirloom paper to write your wedding vows
Get yourself a nice notebook to start and then ensure you write your vows in handmade heirloom wedding vow booklets or on custom stationary. (Debbie Wong Design in Calgary is fantastic!) These add a beautiful touch to your wedding and will be keepsakes for your detail photography as well as something to save and keep for years to come.
It’s okay to be nervous but don’t stress about your wedding vows!
Another great tip: try not to stress when you think about writing your vows. This will make it harder to figure out what to say. You know how much you love your partner and all of their wonderful qualities. You just need to get it down on paper. Start jotting down words about their qualities that you love then move on to amazing experiences or funny stories. Our suggestion is to then sit on this for a day or two and then come back to it. Vow writing is a process and can’t (or shouldn’t) be done in a day! It doesn’t need to be perfect. It’s not an essay or an application. Talk to your partner in a way that you normally talk to each other. Try to close your eyes and picture yourselves there on your wedding day. Envisioning this moment may help the words flow more freely. This will guarantee your vows are an authentic reflection of your love and relationship together.
Remember to make meaningful promises in your wedding vows
Think about why you are marrying your partner and perhaps take yourself back to some difficult moments you might have shared in the past, and amazing ones too. You don’t have to say “in sickness and in health” in your wedding vows. How does your partner show up for you in meaningful ways? What values mean the most to them? What do you want your marriage to look like and how will you help your partner achieve that? These are some great starting points that are sure to get that pen flowing for amazing vows.
No matter what you choose to write for your wedding vows, know that it will come from the heart and it will be amazing!
Happy writing!
