How to change your name in Alberta when getting married

How to change your name in Alberta when getting married

Step 1:

Get a Marriage Certificate Before you can change your name, you need a marriage certificate. In Alberta, you can obtain a marriage certificate by contacting the Alberta Vital Statistics Agency. You can request a certificate online or by mail, and the processing time is typically one to two weeks.

Step 2:

Update your Identification Once you have your marriage certificate, it’s time to update your identification documents. Start with your driver’s license or provincial identification card. You will need to visit a registry agent in person to update your information. Bring your old identification card, your marriage certificate, and two other pieces of identification to prove your identity. The registry agent will update your information, and you will receive a new card with your new name on it.

Step 3:

Change your Social Insurance Number Next, you will need to update your Social Insurance Number (SIN) with Service Canada. You can do this by filling out the application form for a new SIN card and submitting it along with your marriage certificate and updated identification.

Step 4:

Update your Health Card Your health card also needs to be updated with your new name. You can update your information at any Alberta Health Services office. Bring your old card, your marriage certificate, and updated identification. Once your information is updated, you will receive a new card with your new name on it.

Step 5:

Notify other organizations and institutions Once you have updated your identification documents, it’s time to notify other organizations and institutions of your name change. This includes your employer, bank, credit cards, and any other organizations you are associated with. You will need to provide them with a copy of your marriage certificate and updated identification.

In conclusion, changing your name in Alberta after getting married is a straightforward process. It may take some time to update all your identification documents and notify all the necessary organizations, but the end result will be worth it. By following these simple steps, you can start your new life with your new name.
