Rebecca + Kyle
We love being Calgary wedding photographers – especially when we get to spend the day with amazing couples like Rebecca and Kyle!
How did you meet?:
I was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia and had planned a weekend getaway with my best friend to the Whitsundays, a beautiful paradise in central Queensland. Since childhood, Kyle had wanted to visit Australia and in 2014 he decided to bite the bullet and book a 2 month trip to explore the East Coast and stay with family on the Gold Coast.
It was at Long Island Resort that Kyle and I first met. He caught my eye right away and apparently, he thought the same. After a few drinks and a night of Karaoke we started chatting. After learning that he would be staying with family on the Gold Coast (only an hour from Brisbane) we decided to catch up after his tour and did just that. We would see each other each weekend until he returned to Canada and although it was hard to say goodbye, at that point in our lives we just weren’t ready for the uncertainty of a long-distance relationship.
We did however stay in touch and decided to book a trip to Europe together in 2015. This trip was so eye opening for us and exploring such beautiful and unique countries together really built and strengthened a strong foundation for our relationship. We grew so close and knew at this point that we had to be together. Although we both had to return home without each other, we stayed in almost constant contact and grew closer as the days passed. After only 2 months my visa was approved and I made the move to Canada to be with Kyle.
Engagement story:
Whilst we were visiting my family in Australia last November we’d decided to make a trip back to the Whitsundays, where we’d first met. To my surprise, Kyle had planned a helicopter ride over The Great Barrier Reef – landing on a secluded section of Whitehaven Beach for a romantic picnic. Just as we were about to re-board the helicopter, Kyle asked the pilot to take some photos of us. That’s when he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. It was such a magical moment and of course I couldn’t wait to say YES!
The Wedding Day:
Our wedding day was absolutely perfect! We were a little concerned to wake up to cloudy skies however a quick check of our weather app confirmed that things were going to clear up, and they certainly did.
We chose to get married at Knox United Church, its beauty is just breathtaking and we loved the sound of the pipe organ. Seeing Kyle at the Altar put me at ease when walking down the aisle, I couldn’t wait to get to him.
Our reception was full of fun, laughter and dancing – which was exactly what we wanted. Due to my family being in Australia, we had a smaller wedding of 55 people. It was intimate and gave us plenty of opportunity to mingle with everyone.
Travelling is such a huge part of our lives and as we’re planning on moving back to Australia in October we wanted to tie in adventure and travelling where we could. Our cake had a stunning golden world map on the top tear with an ‘Our Adventure Begins’ cake topper. Our wedding favors were found in a luggage themed box. Our first dance together was to Feels Like Home by Chantal Kreviazuk. The lyrics to this song have so much meaning to us.
We are so thrilled to start this new chapter of our life in Australia as Husband and Wife!
