Wedding Cake Inspiration
As a Calgary wedding photographer I have the great fortune of seeing and eating absolutely stunning, delicious cakes all summer long. (Thank goodness I do a lot of walking!)
Wedding cakes and desserts are true works of art that give couples the opportunity to really highlight their wedding colours and theme, but also their personalities and who they are as a couple. It’s important to note that a traditional cake isn’t always necessary. Some couples prefer alternatives to cakes such as a variety of desserts like pies, profiteroles, squares, cinnamon buns or cupcakes.
The history of the wedding cake is an interesting one. Wedding cakes were originally meant to bring good luck to the couple on their new journey. Originally, wedding cake wasn’t even cake! In ancient Rome, bread was broken over the bride’s head for good luck in the marriage. Other traditions like profiteroles were stacked high into the shape of a tiered cake for the couple to kiss over. The bride’s pie is an interesting tradition where young maidens would have a piece of the pie and whomever discovered the glass ring inside the pie would be the next to marry.
Planning your ideas for your wedding cake can be daunting task. The best part is, you can pin several ideas to your Pinterest board and get really adventurous. Cake test tasting can be a really fun activity to do together with your fiance, and allows you to see what options there are that combine both of your preferences and personalities.
I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite wedding cakes (I have included macarons, pies and other desserts into this list) to help you in your planning journey!

This beautiful cake is perfect for spring. The ombre coloring is soft, romantic and unique!
This cake is so romantic and modern. If you are a couple that wants to opt for simple romance, one small cutting cake with your feature flowers adorning it and a small accent at the bottom would be beautiful!
This traditional bride’s pie was made by the groom (so romantic!) and was a perfect addition for this 1920’s vintage themed wedding.
This wedding’s theme was “berries”. The cake was was a “naked cake” adorned with a variety of berries and beautiful rich colors for fall.
The setting for your dessert is also important. These homemade cupcakes are all unique in their styliing, just like the couple and the stand is a vintage heirloom.
You may wish to have a cake and accompanying desserts, or just desserts. Macarons are a delicious french dessert that can be made in many different flavors to suit a couple’s style and offer variety to guests!
The ultimate in clean and modern, white on white with a plaster design is fresh and clean looking. The top layer can be used for cutting and to keep for the couple and the bottom layer would be cut and served to guests.
This delicious cake features the floral styling of the wedding and is gluten-free (yum!) The bicycle topper is a new take on a traditional topper as the couple loves to ride a tandem bike together!
