Here are some of our favourite Calgary wedding and engagement photography locations to consider.
What Makes a Great Calgary Wedding Photo Location?
Before choosing a location, think about what you actually want your photographs to look and feel like.
Do you want:

For wedding days especially, we would rather have 45 relaxed minutes somewhere great than spend half your portrait time sitting in a car.

You don’t necessarily need one specific landmark, either.
Sometimes the best photographs come from simply walking through an area and looking for interesting architecture, light and textures.
2. Prince’s Island Park
Prince’s Island Park is one of Calgary’s most recognizable green spaces and can provide a beautiful mix of nature and city scenery.

Your location matters.
But light matters just as much.
A beautiful location at noon can look completely different from the same location at golden hour.
For romantic portraits, we often love the softer light around sunrise or sunset.
Calgary’s long summer evenings can give you incredible flexibility.
But don’t forget that the exact timing changes throughout the year.
A July wedding and a December wedding will have dramatically different sunset times.
That’s why we recommend building your wedding photography timeline around the actual light rather than choosing portrait times based solely on the clock.
What About Calgary Winter Wedding Photos?
Don’t automatically assume winter means you need to stay indoors.
Snow can create some incredible photographs.

For a quick portrait session, you can accomplish a surprising amount in 20–30 minutes.
For a more relaxed session, we’d recommend approximately 45–60 minutes.
If you want multiple locations, you’ll need to account for:

- Getting everyone organized
- Finding the right spot
- Changing shoes or outfits
- Actual photography time
This is why we don’t recommend trying to cram five locations into your wedding day.
You want to spend your wedding experiencing your wedding, not sitting in traffic.
Should You Choose One Location or Multiple Locations?
For an engagement session, multiple locations can be fun.
For a wedding day, we’re usually more selective.
One great location can give you:
- Wide portraits
- Close portraits

You don’t necessarily need to go somewhere new every 20 minutes.
In fact, staying put often creates a much more relaxed experience.

Gardens and parks start coming back to life, but weather can be unpredictable.
Have a backup plan.
Summer
Summer gives you long evenings and lots of daylight.

Winter
Winter offers a completely different aesthetic.

What Should You Wear for Calgary Engagement Photos?

If you’re photographing downtown, you might choose something more structured and editorial.
If you’re in a park, softer textures and movement can work beautifully.
If you’re doing a more casual neighbourhood session, wear something that actually feels like you.

Don’t Forget About Permits
This is an important one.
Not every Calgary location has the same photography rules.
The City of Calgary states that casual photography is allowed without a permit in many locations, but Reader Rock Garden and Devonian Gardens require photography permits, and commercial photography has additional requirements.
Reader Rock Garden currently requires permits for both private and public photography sessions.
Devonian Gardens also requires a photography permit for professional photography.
If you’re planning a wedding or engagement session at a public location, check the current rules before your date.
Rules, fees and availability can change.
The Best Calgary Wedding Photo Location Isn’t Necessarily the Most Popular
Pinterest and Instagram can make it seem like every couple needs to photograph in the exact same places.
You don’t.
