What Does a Wedding Photographer Actually Do?
Wedding photography is about considerably more than showing up with a camera for a few hours.

When Should You Book Your Calgary Wedding Photographer?
Ideally, once your venue and wedding date are secured, start looking for your photographer.
Popular Saturdays — particularly during the summer and early fall — can book well in advance.
Our own advice is to reach out as soon as you have your date and venue confirmed. We generally recommend couples book around a year ahead when possible, although the ideal timing varies depending on the season, day of the week and photographer.
If you’re planning a wedding more than a year away, don’t worry about being “too early.” You can always start conversations and get a feel for photographers whose work you love.
Also, if you’re planning a wedding much sooner?
Ask anyway.
Dates open up. Weekday weddings have different availability from Saturdays, and sometimes your dream photographer happens to have your date available.

This is one of the first questions couples understandably ask.
There isn’t one standard Calgary wedding photography price because photographers offer very different levels of experience, coverage, artistry and service.

How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Need?
This is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make.
There is no magic number that works for every wedding.
An intimate ceremony and dinner might need only a few hours. A large wedding with two getting-ready locations, a ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour and a late-night reception may benefit from significantly more coverage.
As a general starting point:
6 hours
Often works well for smaller weddings where you don’t need extensive getting-ready or reception coverage.
8 hours
A popular option for a relatively streamlined wedding day and enough time for getting ready, ceremony, portraits and some reception coverage.
10 hours
Gives you considerably more breathing room and can allow your photographer to tell more of the complete story, from getting ready through the reception.
12+ hours
Ideal for larger or more complex wedding days, multiple locations, extensive getting-ready coverage, large cultural celebrations or couples who want the full story from beginning to end.
The important thing isn’t simply counting hours.
It’s asking:
What parts of our wedding day do we want to remember?
If you want photographs of your grandmother helping you into your dress, your friends getting ready with you, your partner opening a letter from you, the ceremony, portraits, dinner, speeches and the dance floor — your photographer needs to be there long enough to photograph those things.
Should You Have a First Look?
There is no right answer.
A first look can be wonderful if you want to see each other before the ceremony and have more of your portraits completed before guests arrive.
It can also create a more relaxed timeline and give you more time to enjoy your cocktail hour.
But if you have always dreamed of seeing your partner for the first time as you walk down the aisle, do that.
Your photographs should support the experience you want — not dictate it.
With or without a first look, we can build a timeline that gives you beautiful portraits without making your wedding day feel like one giant photography appointment.
How Much Time Should You Allow for Wedding Photos?
This is where thoughtful planning makes a huge difference.
A wedding photography timeline might include:
Getting ready: approximately 1–2 hours
Family portraits: approximately 20–45 minutes
Wedding party portraits: approximately 20–45 minutes
Couple portraits: approximately 30–90 minutes
Reception details: approximately 15–30 minutes
Sunset portraits: approximately 10–20 minutes
These are starting points, not rules.
The amount of time you need depends on your wedding, your family, your locations, the size of your wedding party and how much variety you want in your photographs.

Calgary Wedding Photography Is All About the Light
One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced local photographer is knowing how Calgary’s light behaves throughout the year.
And Calgary light can be spectacular!
Summer evenings can give you that beautiful golden glow long after dinner.

No.
However, we love them!
An engagement session gives you an opportunity to get comfortable with your photographer before the wedding day and discover what it feels like to be photographed together.
It can also be a fun excuse to dress up, explore Calgary, go somewhere meaningful to you or simply spend an afternoon together.

And if you’re nervous about being photographed?
That’s actually one of the best reasons to do one.
You get to practice without a room full of wedding guests watching.
What Should You Wear for Engagement Photos?
Wear something that makes you feel like yourself — just a slightly more polished version.
We generally recommend thinking about:
Movement
Choose clothing you can actually move in.
Coordination
Your outfits don’t need to match. They should complement each other.
Personality
If you’re a jeans-and-boots couple, you don’t have to pretend you’re formal people for your engagement session.
Variety
If you have time, bringing a second outfit can give your gallery a completely different feeling.
Most importantly:
Don’t wear something just because Pinterest told you to.
Your photographs should feel like you.

Should You Have Getting-Ready Photos?
If you want your wedding gallery to tell the entire story of the day, absolutely.
The getting-ready portion of a wedding can contain some of the most emotional photographs:
Your best friend helping with your dress.
Parents seeing you for the first time.
Your partner opening a letter.
The wedding party laughing in the hotel room.
The quiet moment before you leave for the ceremony.
These aren’t simply “getting ready pictures.”

We generally recommend allowing approximately 20–30 minutes for the groom or partner’s preparation and around 45 minutes to an hour for the bride or partner, depending on the size of the group and how much you’d like photographed.
How Many Family Photos Should You Take?
This is one area where more isn’t always better.
We recommend creating a specific family photo list before your wedding day.
For example:
- Couple + both sets of parents
- Couple + bride’s parents
- Couple + groom’s parents
- Couple + siblings
- Couple + grandparents
- Couple + immediate family
If you have a large family, decide in advance which combinations are essential.
Why?
Because family photographs can quickly turn into:
“Okay, now Aunt Susan needs one with her cousins, and Uncle Dave is somewhere outside, and Grandma needs to sit down…”
Suddenly 20 minutes has become an hour.

When you’re comparing Calgary wedding photographers, ask yourself:
Do I love their entire galleries?
Not just the 20 best images on Instagram.
Ask to see a full wedding gallery.
Do I like how their couples look?
Does the couple look comfortable?
Are the photographs feeling natural?
Do I like their editing style?
Look at skin tones, colour, contrast, black-and-white work and consistency.
How is their personality?
You’re going to spend a significant portion of your wedding day with this person.
You should actually enjoy being around them.
Does the photographer understand weddings?
A photographer who has photographed hundreds of weddings will have encountered an enormous range of timelines, venues, personalities, weather conditions and family situations.
Experience matters.
How do they photograph moments or do they manufacture them?
There’s room for beautiful portraits and editorial photographs in a wedding gallery.
But you should also see the moments in between.
The hugs.
The tears.
The ridiculous laughter.
The grandparents.
The friends.
The dance floor.
The things you didn’t even realize happened.

- What happens after we book?
The last question is especially important.
Your photographer shouldn’t disappear after taking your deposit.
The experience between booking and wedding day matters, too.
