Before we get into specific venues, let’s talk about what we actually look for when photographing a wedding.
A venue doesn’t have to be expensive to photograph beautifully.
And it doesn’t have to be the most popular venue on Instagram.
Some of our favourite photographs have come from spaces that simply had great light, interesting surroundings and room for the day to unfold naturally.
Here are some of the things we look for.
Beautiful Natural Light
Windows can make an enormous difference.
Beautiful natural light gives us options for getting-ready photographs, portraits and candid moments without everything feeling overly staged.
Interesting Architecture
Historic details, dramatic staircases, stone, wood, arches, large windows and modern architecture can all create beautiful visual elements.
Multiple Photo Locations
We love venues where we can create variety without spending half the day driving.
A garden, courtyard, staircase, hotel lobby, outdoor path or interesting interior can give your gallery several different looks.
A Good Plan B
This one is particularly important in Alberta.
You can plan an outdoor ceremony six months in advance and still end up with rain, snow, wind, smoke or a surprise 30°C day.
A beautiful indoor backup location can be a lifesaver.
Room to Actually Enjoy Your Wedding
This might be the most important one.
Your wedding venue should work for your guests — not just your Instagram feed.
We want you to have enough time and space to eat, talk, hug your family, drink champagne, dance and actually enjoy the day.
The photographs should fit into that experience rather than take it over.

The historic downtown hotel has beautiful architectural details and elegant event spaces that lend themselves particularly well to timeless and editorial photography.

Silvertip Resort is one of the classic Canmore options for couples who want a mountain wedding with spectacular scenery.

One of the best things about Canmore is that you don’t have to host a huge wedding to get incredible scenery.

You don’t need 200 guests to make a mountain wedding feel spectacular.
Banff Wedding Venues

What Should You Consider Before Booking an Alberta Wedding Venue?
Before falling completely in love with a venue, ask yourself these questions.
How does it photograph in bad weather?
Don’t just look at the sunny-day Instagram photographs.
Ask to see photographs taken indoors.
Where will we take portraits?
Can you photograph on the property?
Do you need to drive somewhere?
Are there restrictions?
How much travel is involved?
If you’re getting ready at one location, marrying at another and having your reception somewhere else, your timeline needs to account for travel.
What time does the venue allow photography?
This matters more than couples sometimes realize.
If you want getting-ready photographs, ask when your photographer can arrive.
If you want sunset portraits, ask when you need to leave.
Are there photography restrictions?
Some venues, parks and mountain locations have specific rules.
What’s the Plan B?
And again:
Does Plan B look good in photographs?
That’s the question we really want you to ask.
Don’t Choose Your Venue Just Because It Looks Good on Instagram
This might sound strange coming from wedding photographers, but hear us out.
Your venue needs to do more than photograph beautifully.
It needs to feel good.
Your guests should be comfortable.
The food should be good.
The logistics should make sense.
The space should work for the number of people you’re inviting.
And most importantly:
You should actually want to spend your wedding day there.
