Romantic Rustic Calgary Wedding
When Layne and Josh met with me last year and told me their story, I was immediately smitten! They told me that they were high school sweethearts and planning a romantic, rustic wedding in Calgary at the Crestmont Hall. The way that these two love birds interact is so amazing. It’s as if there is no one else in the room but the two of them. The way that Josh looks at Layne with pure love is so beautiful and heart-warming that I couldn’t help but tear up during their ceremony!
Josh and I have been together for almost 9 years. We met in high school when I was in grade 11 and he was in grade 12, in Chemistry 20. He sat in front of me for the first half part of the semester and would occasionally turn around and ask me for “help” (not sure if he actually needed it or not!) I eventually moved desks to sit closer to my friends…but then the next week…Josh suddenly moved as well, and it happened to be right beside me. He continued to ask questions and borrow every pen or pencil I seemed to have, which of course I didn’t mind because I thought he was pretty cute. However, little did I know, Josh had been telling his friends about me. His two friends, Anthony and Troy, had given Josh an ultimatum to ask for my number. They told Josh that if he didn’t ask for my number by a certain date they would come in and write “Josh likes Layne” on the chalkboard. So, thanks to Anthony and Troy, at the end of December 2006, Josh asked me for my phone number and we have been together ever since!
Engagement story: Josh had been in away in Saskatchewan for work the week prior. He asked if I wanted to go to dinner when he got back, so he made a reservation at our favorite restaurant on the Saturday that he got back. We go there all the time, so I didn’t think anything of it. When it was getting close to our reservation time, he asked if we could go a bit early so we could stop at the mall. I was busy quickly getting ready so we could leave early when josh called from downstairs to ask what boots I was going to wear (he always asks this so he can move my shoes from the garage to the front door for me, so I still wasn’t suspicious). Once I was done I rushed down the stairs so we wouldn’t be lat. As I quickly went to put on my boot I felt something at the toe. My mom’s dog, Charlie, loves hiding his bones in shoes, so I thought it was just one of his bones. I reached in and pulled out a ring box. Josh got down on one knee, and I instantly starting crying and started saying “no, you’re not doing this!” I think Josh said some really sweet things, but I can’t quite remember exactly what was said because I was crying too much, but I managed to let out a “yes!” Turns out he only wanted to leave early so I had time before dinner to call my mom and friends.
Our all-time favorite moment of the wedding day was the first look. The day had been such a long time coming and something we had been looking forward to for years. So to finally see each other on our wedding day was huge for both of us. And we definitely both cried…even if Josh won’t fully admit it!
Our second favorite moment was when the commissioner announced that we could kiss! There was something much more special about this kiss than all the ones before it. It was our first kiss being married, and the best one yet. Josh said, it was a once in a lifetime moment. It was awesome.
Our third favorite moment was dinner. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, the company was my favorite. Josh and I chose to sit at a sweet heart table with just the two of us, which I am so happy we decided to do. I have never been a fan of the traditional head table, so we wanted something different. It gave us a chance to be alone, talk to just each other, and look out at all our family and friends together in one place.
There is so much we loved about the day. The first thing we both said we loved was the cake/cupcakes and display. It was important for us to have homemade cupcakes. My late grandma’s devil’s food cake recipe is Josh and I’s favorite, so naturally we had to have that as our wedding cake. My mom baked all the cupcakes and cake from scratch, and I decorated them, along with making all the décor on the cake table. We both loved how it turned out.
The second thing we both said we loved were the centerpieces. Josh said he loved how they were completely handmade and fit into our theme. He even put up with the mess I constantly made while making them!
Lastly, I LOVED my dress. I wanted a low back, lace dress. I thought it was going to be a painful process to find the dress because I’m the most indecisive person ever. Thankfully, it was only the 4th dress I tried on and I was in love. It was light, comfortable, and not too structured.
But another couple favorites were the mismatched bridesmaid dresses and of course the bouquets, they were SO amazing and perfect!
